Please stop this GNOME Tabs Stupidity

EDIT: As I expected the tabs thing is a prank! Take a deep breath everyone and relax.

I really hope this GNOME 3.0 Tabs “mania” is a prank, because it just seems so, sooooo stupid. Really. It’s like flushing down the toilet all of the UI simplicity that GNOME is supposedly aiming for.

Here is a mock-up screenshot of how GNOME 3 Release Name “Tabs” could look like if this insanity becomes reality. (Click “Full Size” bottom-left in the popup for a good resolution)

  • Why the hell would I want to have Tabs in my movie player? Am I going to watch two things at the same time?
  • Why the hell would I want to click on Tabs like insane in my instant messenger where there is already perfect treeview based organization and protocol icon-based indication? I will be happy to have a search box, but tabs? – No, thanks.
  • Also why would I want to have Tabs in my audio player when there is already a treeview with different Views to select (Playlists and others)?

So, yeah, in case this isn’t a prank… please don’t do this to us!

I agree, tabs in a movie player and Pidgin just don’t have a purpose. Tabs in Banshee I can see, because it’s the media on the device itself, rather then a playing item. Firefox tabs are a given awesomeness, while tabs in nautilus and terminal are neat if used correctly, which I don’t as of right now.

    tabs are great!

but probably not in a movieplayer….
and well pdgin since forever has a UI that sucks…

but mostly GNOME and tabs are great!

Tabs can be great (file manager, browser, …) but they don’t need to go too far.

Like you said, tabs in a movie player. What’s that all about?

Lol at all the languages in the screenshot (English, German, Dutch, Russian?, …)

  • Ivan N. Zlatev

    @All

The “screenshot” is a mockup. I have constructed it by copy-pasting images posted by GNOME people on the GNOME Planet. That’s the reason for the many languages you see. :)

Yeah, i totally agree with you. The image is funny though.

but I think that Tabs are useful, but when used too frequently, can confuse users…

Tabs are great… EXCEPT in the movie player. A list of “last seen” movies would be more than enough.

Tabs in a movie player would definitely not be the way to watch two things at the same time. Arguably, they would enforce the opposite — you could only watch the active tab, right?

  • Pacol

I’m disagree, sorry, but the tabs reduce the number windows in the desktop. Yeah, the tabs in the totem player are not very useful… ok.

We need to move the gnome desktop, maybe some ideas are not very useful but it is good to have such discussions.

    Good post.

    (Cross-posted from Digg)

The only way that I’d agree with a movie player having tabs for different movies being played within the same window would be if there was a way to choose from and open movies from the filesystem within the window. That way, I can find a random video and then middle-click it to open it up for later viewing. I’d say something like a Firefox history sidebar or OS X-like side drawer would be necessary for tabbed browsing of movies within the same window.

Without such an addition alongside, I fail to see the need for tabs in such an application as a media player.

Also, I’m surprised that such an application as Miro (based on Firefox, meant for viewing downloaded videos from the web) doesn’t allow for tabbed browsing, which would allow for better multitasking.

So it’s not necessarily the appropriateness of the tabs or the placement of tabs in an application, but exactly how these tabs are implemented as part of the application’s overall user experience.

So totem and other players can do WITH the tabs, but they can definitely do with an active file/folder view to tab-open from.

  • http://rayne-vandunem.livejournal.com Rayne

Wouldn’t the same go for web browsers, since one can only view the active tab while the other tabs are idling?

Plus, the default setting should allow for playback only in the current view. Those who want different should be allowed change the settings by themselves.

  • Frank

Well, I don’t think I would use it, but I can’t see any harm in having it. As long as you can turn off the tab bar(s), I don’t think it would be too bad.

  • Ivan N. Zlatev

We have playlists for media players, hence we don’t need tabs as well.

  • Paulo Cesar

I still don’t understand people taking this for serious… it’s just lame..

I support Linux 100% but I feel that people should make an objective decision for themselves after reading The Truth about Linux.

  • Opengeek

IMVHO tabs might be useful on Nautilus or maybe GNOME has teo copy the Split View that exists in D3lphin (it’s the only think that I like from it) that permits you to drag’n'drop thing place to place without opening more than one window.

I use pidgin and tabs are very useful when you have more than one conversation at the same time.

The big stupidity would be to put tabs on Rythmbox or Totem

  • Your a Tool

Quit being such a tool. You are afraid of change, admit it, and move on. You sound like MS back when Opera and FF were offering tabbed browsing and they said it was a useless feature. Why are you assuming that because you don’t find it useful, no one will. SINCE WHEN DID YOU BECOME A USABILITY EXPERT????? Do you have any valid arguments or is this just another piece of blog spam crap?
